Thorold, Canada’s Canal City, is home to 20,800 people, and is centrally located in the Niagara region, adjacent to the St. Lawrence Seaway’s Welland Canal.
Thorold is famous for the St. Lawrence Seaway and the twinned flight locks where ships climb the Niagara Escarpment. The locks allow ships to climb and descend the Niagara Escarpment in both directions on the canal.
The Thorold vehicle tunnel was built under the Welland Canal approximately 28 years ago. Maintained by the St. Lawrence Seaway, it allows quick access under the canal, eliminating the long waits at area lift bridges. This tunnel is unique because it was built under an existing canal.
The Merritt Trail follows the route of the old second canal, offering a view of distinctive buildings and relics from around 1850. The city claims to be Canada’s first virtual community, providing services & information via the Internet. It is also the seat of Niagara regional government offices.
Attractions include Flight Locks viewing at Lock 7 and the historic Battle of Beaverdams Park marking an important battleground from the War of 1812.
