Canada’s Rose City, Welland lies between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in the Niagara Peninsula’s fruit belt. The city’s economy has been historically dependent on manufacturing, which benefited from its proximity to the omnipresent Welland Canal. With a population of more than 50,000, Welland is the third largest city in the Niagara Peninsula. The population of Welland reflects a broad ethnic diversity, but is especially well represented with the French-speaking population. Welland is home to Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology, and is the centre of French education in the Niagara region. Welland is also home to the francophone Community Health Centre.

Welland has become well known for its wall murals, created by artists from all over Ontario, which cover the walls of many buildings.

The old portion of the canal in the downtown core has been converted into a recreational waterway and a world-class rowing course. Merritt’s Island Park has facilities for picnicking, hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. Other outdoor recreation is available in hundreds of hectares of city parks, sports fields and recreational facilities.

Special events and attractions include the Rose Festival culminating in the Rose Festival Parade; Niagara Regional Exhibition; Mike Burwell Welland Triathlon; the Niagara Food Festival; and the Welland Folklore Festival.
